Plot

Question: Why did Omri decide to take Little Bear and the horse outside in the backyard?

Answer: The horse was having difficulty walking in the carpeting.  He needed dirt to walk on. 


Question: What page do we learn the full name of the soldier?

Answer: Pg. 58 - Tommy Atkins


Question: What three things did Omri get for Little Bear before he went to school one day.  What page? 

Answer: (pg. 61) Biggish strips of bark for the longhouse, grass for the horse, and straight twigs for the posts.  


Question: What happened to the Old Chief that Omri placed in the cabinet? Why did Omri put him in the cabinet?

Answer: He died of fright.  Omri wanted his bow and quiverful of arrows for Little Bear. 


Question: What was Omri using his handicraft class for? 

Answer: (pg. 66) He is using his class to make a teepee.  Patrick is kind of annoyed that he is doing all this stuff for the indian.  Patrick thinks Omri is kind of taking things to the extreme for a plastic indian.  He doesn't understand.


Vocabulary

Question: (pg. 51) Read the sentence with the word foreboding in it.  What does this word mean?  Use your context. 

Answer: Foreboding means that Omri was fearful that something bad had happened to the horse and Little Bear. 


Question: (pg. 87) Read the sentence with the word tourniquet in it.  What is this and what is it used for?

Answer: A tourniquet is a medical supply that helps stop extreme bleeding.  You put it on a person's arms or legs to cut off the blood flow. 


Question: (pg. 66) Read the sentence with the word peevishly in it.  What does this mean and how do you know?

Answer: Peevishly means annoyingly.  Patrick is annoyed at Omri for going on and on about this indian.  You know it is a negative thing because Patrick uses it with the word stupid. 


Question: (pg. 72) Read the sentence with the word bewilderment.  What does this mean and what page gives you clues to this meaning? 

Answer: You actually have to read to page 73 to get the meaning.  It says he stared blankly at first, then with dawning terror.  Bewilderment is a sense of confusion.....not knowing what is happening.  It is not a positive thing because it is linked with terror. 


Question: (pg. 88) Read the sentence with the word galvanized.  What is the meaning and how do you know?

Answer: Galvanized into action means he was thrown into immediate action.  His brothers had come in, the indian was making noise, Omri knew he had to act quickly, or they would find out.  I know it means act quickly because it says he flung himself on the floor, he groped under the bed, he leaped up.....all these things are things done quickly. 


Miscellaneous for Lucy

Question: What did Omri tell Tommy to calm him down? 

Answer: (pg. 56) "It's alright....I am a dream you are having."


Question: Omri can't lie to his mother, but thankfully he is saved from her questioning when what happens? 

Answer: (pg. 68) The phone rings just as Omri is coming home from school.  He dashes up to his room. 


Question: What page do we read about Omri's father?  What word(s) could describe his father? 

Answer: (pg. 75) He is quick to get upset, but he is fair.  He makes Omri pay for the ruined seed trays. 


Question: What page tells what tool Little Bear is NOT happy about and why?

Answer: (pg. 71) The ax is too heavy for Little Bear.  He wanted a tomahawk. 


Question: What page are the "three sisters" mentioned in this text and what are they? 

Answer: (pg. 77) Only corn is mentioned on page 77, but the other crops are beans and squash.


Connections

Question: (pg. 64) What connection can be made on this page.  Text to text, text to self, text to world? 

Answer: Patrick tells Omri he is being dreamier than ever.  This could be a text to self connection.....we ALL daydream. 


Question: (pg. 83) What text to world connection can be made regarding what is happening on this page? 

Answer: All siblings, regardless of age, nationality, boy/girl, etc. can identify with ARGUING.  Omri wants his brothers OUT OF HIS ROOM.  So we can all know how Omri is feeling on this page.  (negative) On a positive note, Gillon admires Omri's work on the miniatures he is building.  Sometimes our siblings admire our work. 


Question: (pg. 67) Explain any connection that can be made on this page. 

Answer: Telling a "white lie"....text to self.  Omri tells Patrick that mum is having guests over.  Patrick knows that it is a lie.  His feelings are hurt.  Have you ever done that?


Question: What connection can be made on pg. 62?

Answer: Omri doesn't really like to read unless he has already read a book before.  Some of us don't like to read either.  This would be a text to self connection. 


Question: (pg. 79) What connections might be made on this page? 

Answer: (Text to self)  Omri FINALLY tells Patrick about the indian, but Patrick can't believe it is true.  He knows Omri really well and he can tell he isn't lying, but he also can't believe it about the indian. 
(Text to self) Omri was finally glad to have his secret out.  Have you ever been relieved to tell a secret?


Big "Little" Scares

Question: What are three big dangers for Little Bear in the yard? 

Answer: Pebbles are boulders, grass is like a tree to Little Bear, ants are a huge danger, and even shadows of birds are frightening. 


Question: What belongs to Gillon that is a HUGE threat to Little Bear?

Answer: Gillon has a pet rat. 


Question: Omri builds Little Bear something to cook with.  It is unfamiliar to Little Bear and more than a bit dangerous to have in a room.  What is it? 

Answer: (pg. 91 and 92) It is called a spit and it is a way to cook meat over an open fire!  Omri started a fire, rather small, but a fire, in his room. 


Question: Patrick wants to do something with the cabinet, but Omri realizes that could be a REAL problem for Little Bear.  What does Patrick want to do?

Answer: (pg. 86-87) Patrick wants to put armies and armies of people in the cabinet.  He thinks it would be great fun to put them in squirmishes, etc. he doesn't realize the "toys" would do what THEY wanted, not what Patrick and Omri would want them to do.  They probably would kill each other. 


Question: On what page does Omri realize that the cabinet is not all "fun"? 

Answer: (pg. 88) Omri is telling Patrick about what happened to the Indian Chief.  He picked up his dead body and then wiped his hands on his jeans.  He realizes he WAS alive, and now he is DEAD.
