Question: How did STOCK MARKET SPECULATION cause BLACK TUESDAY?
Answer: because there was NO REGULATIONS--- people bought at a LOW PRICE and then expected to sell for a HIGH PRICE... often times the stock price did not reflect its true value. When the market crashed... the INFLATED stocked plummeted and everyone who had bought on MARGIN (credit) was left with MASSIVE DEBT.



Question: How does President Harding/Hoover's INCREASE of TARIFFS during the 1920s cause the Great Depression?
Answer: A TARIFF is a TAX ON IMPORTS... therefore if we raise TARIFFS on another country... then in retaliation they will raise tariffs on the USA... CAUSING A TARIFF WAR! No one buys ANYTHING causing economic hardship on businesses... then people lose their jobs :(

Question: How did the DUST BOWL cause the Great Depression?
Answer: wiped out FARMERS and the agriculture economy...

Question: What was a "RUN ON (the) BANK"?

How did this CAUSE the Great Depression?
Answer: 1) when everyone ran to the bank after the stock market crashed and PULLED ALL OF THEIR MONEY OUT!

2) Because the bank had made "RISKY" or "BAD" loans or had over-invested in the stock market... the bank did not have enough money to give back to everyone... therefore they had to CLOSE! PEOPLE DID NOT TRUST THE BANKS ANYMORE!

Answer: We were going into DEBT!

Answer: If the government consistently comes to the rescue of the people... after a period of time... people will start to RELY on the government!

Question: Explain the "COURT PACKING" problem under FDR... in detail...
Answer: Supreme Court was striking down New Deal legislation.
Roosevelt proposed a bill to allow the president to name a new federal judge for each who did not retire by age 70 and 1/2.... and 6 justices over age limit.
Would have increased the number of justices from 9 to 15, giving FDR a majority of his own appointees on the court.
The court-packing bill was not passed by Congress.
