Chapter 15 ~ Electricity
Vocabulary
Question: A unit that measures the energy available to push an electric charge through a circuit
Answer: VOLT
Question: A map of a circuit that uses symbols for each part.
Answer: CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
Question: The flow of electric charge through a material.
Answer: CURRENT
Question: A magnet created by an electric current.
Answer: ELECTROMAGNET
Question: A material that has no resistance to electrical current.
Answer: SUPERCONDUCTOR
Lesson 1
Question: Because wire is often made of copper, it makes a good ___________________.
Answer: CONDUCTOR
Question: When an atom loses electrons, it has a(n) __________________.
Answer: POSITIVE CHARGE
Question: Name three materials that make good conductors.
Answer: salt water, copper, silver, gold, graphite, aluminum
Question: Name three materials that make good insulators.
Answer: cotton, glass, rubber, plastic
Question: Why can an electric charge move easily through a conductor?
Answer: Conductors have electrons that are not tightly bond (held) to their atoms.
Lesson 2
Question: Look at the board. How many resistors are in the ciruit.
Answer: three
Question: What are the two things that a simple circuit must have?
Answer: A simple circuit needs a power source (ie:battery) and a conductor (ie: copper wire).
Question: In a simple circuit, name an item that can act as a resistor?
Answer: light bulb, buzzer, bell
Question: A circuit that has more than one resistor on a wire is a _____________________.
Answer: series circuit
Question: How is an insulator used in a circuit?
Answer: An insulator helps keep the electric charge inside the pathway.
Lesson 3
Question: What is a parallel circuit?
Answer: A parallel circuit is a circuit with more than one branch or pathway.
Question: What is formed by a current flowing through a coiled wire wrapped around an iron core?
Answer: an electromagnet
Question: How is a parallel circuit useful?
Answer: When one pathway is "off", the others can still be on.
Question: What are the two ways you can make an electromagnet stronger?
Answer: 1) increase the number of coils around the core
2) increase the current (power)
Question: Name three important ways that you can avoid getting shocked by an electric current (refer to information from book).
Answer: *don't touch outlets * don't yank out cords
* replace frayed cords * don't touch power lines
* don't touch electrical "objects" when you or it are in water
* don't have electrical appliances near water

Question: How are electromagnets and regular magnets the same?
Answer: Both types of magnets have north and south poles where the magnetism is the strongest.
Question: How are electromagnets and regular magnets different?
Answer: An electromagnet can be turned on or off and become stronger or weaker. A regular magnet can not do either of these.
Question: Explain how conductors and insulators are different.
Answer: A conductor is a material through which an electric charge can move easily. An insulator is a material that stops an electric charge.
Question: Explain how a lightbulb makes light and thermal energy.
Answer: The lighbulb acts as a resistor. It changes some of the electrical energy into light and heat.
Question: Explain how to get a balloon to stick to your hair and why it can happen.
Answer: By rubbing the balloon on your head, it will stick to your hair. This happens because electrons transfer from your hair to the balloon. The balloon now has a negative charge and your hair has a positive charge ~ opposite charges attrack each other.
